The History of St. Vincent

Saint Vincent is a small country located in the Caribbean Sea as a part of the chain of Caribbean islands. On the eastern side of the Caribbean chain, St. Vincent is located about one hundred miles to the west of Barbados, another popular tourist destination. St. Vincent is known for its luscious, fertile soil (Source 1).

St. Vincent’s history is said to have dated back to around 150 AD when Amerindians established settlements there. When the settlers arrived they nicknamed the island “Hairoun” which translates to ‘Land of the Blessed’ in their native language (Source 3). The island of St. Vincent was actually noticed by Christopher Columbus on his way to what he thought was India, but was actually North America back in the 1400’s. Though they were noticed, nobody decided to conquer their island or explore it until the 1700’s. Long before that occurred however, in the early 1600’s a Dutch ship which carried Africans who were being transported as slaves sank near the coast of St. Vincent, in which then the Africans freed themselves and integrated with the early St. Vincent people.

In the late 1700’s the first Europeans arrived at St. Vincent. This group consisted of French men (Source 4). This occurred during the Anglo-French War when a French commander named Charles Marie de Trolong du Rumain took control of the British-owned part of the island (Source 5).

Throughout a series of wars and internal conflict, St. Vincent remained under European control until the late 1900’s when they gained their independence through an election in 1979. Milton Cato's St. Vincent Labour Party was what promised independence to the St. Vincent people (Source 6). With the promise fulfilled, St. Vincent officially regained its independence on October 27th of that year.
